The assignment for your second graded paper is to write a rhetorical analysis. WRITER’S ROLE: You are motivated by curiosity or interest in the process of persuasion and in the persuasive strategies used in a particular work. You want to look closely at how persuasive strategies are used in this work, and you also have a point that you want to make to your readers about the effectiveness of these strategies in persuading an audience. WHOM YOU’RE WRITING FOR: This may very well depend on the kind of work you’re analyzing. If you’re writing about a text, even a newspaper article (see for example the essay “A Mockery of Justice,” beginning on page 214), then you are probably writing to a more academic audience, in which case a more formal(or “high”) writing style might be called for. If, on the other hand, you’re analyzing an advertisement, you’re probably writing to a general audience, and a less formal (or “middle”) writing style may be more appropriate. (See below under “Requirements.”) OVERVIEW Your assignment is to write a rhetorical analysis of a work of your choosing. Rhetoric can be defined as the art of persuasion. Rhetorical analyses, then, are essays that analyze the persuasive strategies used in a particular work and how effective they are. In writing a rhetorical analysis, you will want to pay close attention to text and images,to the types of appeals used, and to the purpose and intended audience of the work you choose. (Information on appeals will be given in class; also refer to pages 205-207 in your textbook.) With this assignment, choosing the work to write about one of the most important decisions you will make. Choose something that interests you, arouses your curiosity, or provokes a reaction from you in some way. Keep in mind that the reaction it provokes does not necessarily have to be positive; one motive forwriting a rhetorical analysis, in fact, might be yourdisagreementwith the author’sview. Disagreeing is fine, butit will require that you effectively demonstrate thatthe author’s rhetoricalstrategies are somehow flawed(for example, by proving thather logic is faulty in some way). Regarding the choice of work, you can choose anything thatyou feel is rhetorical and that you feel you can write convincingly about—with oneexception: the notorious Sarah McLachlan SPCA commercial. In choosing a work to write about, considerthat you’ll needto be able to look at it closely and from multiple aspects, presenting a coherent and persuasive argumentto yourreader. Choose something you’llfeel comfortable analyzing; if you don’twantto write about an academic essay,this assignment doesn’t require you to. However, you will wantto write about a work that makes some attempt to persuade its readers; possible types of works you could considerinclude advertisements, political messages, speeches, visualtexts, newspaper editorials, etc. You can also do a rhetorical analysis of a work from popular culture—for example, a movie or an episode from a TV series—butif you do that, keep in mind that you will want to be able to look at it closely,reflect on it and quote from it in support of your analysis;therefore, justwatching it once is not going to be enough, andhaving accessto it on DVD or some other media would be strongly encouraged. LITERARY MODELS To get an idea of what a rhetorical analysisis, andhopefully to become inspiredto write your own, read the sample essays “A Mockery of Justice” by Matthew James Nance (beginning on page 214) aswell as the two essays posted on D2L: “The Other Car” by Stanley Fish and “Food, Inc.: A Rhetorical Analysis” by Rowen vonPlagenhoef. REQUIREMENTS  Three pages, a minimumof 900words, and a maximum of 1,200 words. Please note thatthe minimum number of wordsdoesnot includetheWorksCited sheet.  Yourpapermust be an analytical persuasive essay, andmust have a thesis statement in its introduction which issupported in the body of the paper. It must also have a conclusion which sums up or restates your argument.  You may write your essay in either “high” or “middle” style, depending on the type of work you’re writing about and the readership your essay is intended for. If writing about an academic essay or printtext other than a newspaper orpopularmagazine article, itis recommended that you write in a more formal style, avoiding the use of the first- (“I”) and second-person (“you”) pronouns. If writing about an advertisement or a work of popular culture, itis recommended that you write in a “middle” style, in which case use of first- and second-person pronounsis acceptable. Rememberthat, in either case, the use ofslang is never acceptable in an academic paper except in passages directly quotedfrom a source. If in doubt aboutwhether“high” or “middle” style is the better choice, ask yourinstructor. For more information on “high” and“middle” style, see pages 368-373 of yourtextbook.  As with all graded papers, we will be doing a workshop during which you willreceive peer feedback on yourrough drafts. Also, as with all graded papersin this class, you will be requiredto submitthe final draft in the dropbox on Desire2Learn (D2L) by the start of class on the due date. Rough drafts are not submitted on D2L.  For this assignment, you may cite only one source:the work which is the subject of yourrhetorical analysis. You must quote this work in yourpaper and cite it in-text using MLA format; you may not refer to any other source forthis assignment. You must also include a separate Works Cited sheet which followsMLA format. (Note that the Works Cited may either be includedin the file containing yourpaper or submitted as a separate file on D2L. However, theWorks Cited does not count toward theminimumword countrequirement. Also, if you failto submityourWorks Cited, I will not grade your paper.)  All final papersin this class must be submitted in MicrosoftWord.  Both the rough draft andthe final papermust be typeddouble-spaced. See the section of your syllabustitled “Papers, Rough Drafts andWritten Assignments” formore detailed information.  The term “rough draft” may be misleading:these should be fair drafts that have already been edited to correct misspellings, grammatical errors, etc., to the best of your ability. The rough draft should be the best version you are able to produce on your own withoutthe feedback of yourpeers and the instructor. It shouldfollow allthe requirements of the final paper, andbe the version that you would turn in for a grade if you were not given the opportunity to revise yourpaperbased on feedback.
