NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION and LISTENING The Conscious and/or subconscious transmission and reception of unspoken messages. The ability to discern and understand stimuli by attending, organizing, interpreting, and remembering. Nonverbal Arenas: Listening Arenas: 1. Appearance 1. Appreciative 2. Kinesics 2. Comprehensive 3. Paralanguage 3. Empathetic 4. Proxemics 4. Critical 5. Chronemics 6. Haptics 7. Olfactory ASSIGNMENT: Partners should collectively decide WHICH TWO film shorts they want to analyze after they have individually reviewed films. See the film handout. You will examine and choose ONE for NV and ONE for listening. You must view NV Power Point and Listening handouts to understand all the arenas. YOU MUST give examples from the two shorts of ALL seven types of NONVERBAL AND the four types of LISTENING. Again, one short for each area. You are not interested in WHAT they are saying but HOW they are saying what they are saying. So, you both are looking for the seven nonverbal cues chosen from one film short and you are to choose a second film short to provide examples of them participating in the four types of listening: Appreciative or Comprehensive or Empathetic or Critical Listening – see Listening handouts. You are to turn in a 3-5-page typed paper providing examples of the NV/Listening examples from the shorts. There should be a cover page with the name of assignment, date, and both partner names. There should be an introductory paragraph of the films you chose and a brief explanation of why. There should be an overall conclusion about your observations; your impressions about watching NV/Listening in practice. You should also refer to information in the Adler book, the NV Power Point and the Listening handouts about the arenas you are observing. One Adler reference per film short will be acceptable; more encouraged. Also, cite the film properly using APA.
