In 960 c.e., the power of the Song Dynasty over most of China ushered into an era of economic prosperity. The Song Dynasty is considered by many classical China's high point in science and technology, the Song Dynasty crumbled after approximately three hundred years due to the invasion of the Mongols, a Turkic people who had lived along China's western borders for millennia. The era following the Mongol conquest, known as the Yuan Dynasty, is also recalled as the Pax Mongolica, during which Mongol governance brought peace across all of Eastern and Central Asia. This peace allowed adventurous Westerners such as Marco Polo to travel all the way to China and bring back to Europe the first reports of its wonders. (Links to an external site.)
