Final Assignment Imagine you are speaking with someone you know (a friend, paren
Final Assignment Imagine you are speaking with someone you know (a friend, parent, relative, etc.) about what you’ve come to understand and (hopefully) appreciate about restorative justice (RJ). They are very interested in getting both a general understanding and your in-depth perspective, including aspects of RJ that most excite, intrigue and/or concern you. Your task is to write-up your responses. Specifically, they would like you to speak to each of the following: How do you define restorative justice in your own words? What are the underlying values and principles? What can you share about the origins of RJ? How does RJ differ from our dominant approach to justice in the US? Why is this difference significant? What, in your opinion, are some implications of taking a restorative approach to justice: for victims? for responsible parties? for community members? for criminal justice professionals (judges, lawyers, police)? What, if any, considerations are there determining if/when to take restorative approach to harm? Are there circumstances and/or behaviors that you believe RJ would not necessarily appropriate? If so, what? Why? How might RJ address both the situational and structural/contextual elements of a situation? What are some (3) examples of examples of specific restorative processes? What are the key elements of these models? Can you provide hypothetic examples of different situations in which you would potentially apply the approaches? What outcomes do you associate with restorative justice? How do you know if/when a restorative approach has been effective? What, if any, aspects of restorative justice require ongoing attention and improvement? Where do you see restorative justice going in the next 5 years? In 20 years? What most resonates with you about RJ? What, if anything else, is important to share about your reflections on restorative justice? * There is no specific minimum required length for this paper. Each prompt/sub-prompt is worth 5 points (100 points total). In the process of addressing the prompts, please integrate and cite at least four (4) different pieces of text from the course readings and at least two (2) additional sources from your own research.
