Assignment Type: Final Essay - Argumentative A quick review of what you've already covered. Topic: As you continue your readings you should be highlighting terms, questioning events, pondering some what ifs, researching ideas presented that are either unfamiliar to you or have grabbed and captured your attention. These processes and interactions are the first steps in identifying a topic and developing a very basic, very kernel of an idea into a topic to be fully explored and presented in a paper. So when I say "you can choose your own topic" understand that means that you are exploring a topic IN the literature. Your essay must focus on something contained in our primary source, the source you are assigned to analyze. The thesis statement should specifically mention what you are going to present to the reader about the primary source. The main ideas should specifically mention something about the primary source that directly supports the thesis you present in the introductory paragraph. To that end, the secondary sources you select should directly support your thesis and main ideas. So choose your secondary sources carefully. Primary Source: Your choice, but must be an essay from weeks 10 - 14. Secondary Sources MANDATORY: 5 Understand that your topic, your thesis, will direct the search for secondary sources. Your job is to formulate a thesis, based on the topic from the literature that you want to dive into, explore, expand upon, present to the reader, then start your search for other published works that agree with your stance, can support ideas you present in your essay, or can justify and serve as outside examples of the ideas you present. This "path" per se, is going to look different from one student to another because each student has a different idea to explore. While the path is different, the result is the same for all, a comprehensive Works Cited page that lists the primary source (because the student has borrowed text from the primary source, usually as an integral component of the thesis and or the main ideas) and at least two secondary sources (other works, outside of the primary source, that address - directly - the primary source or the idea you are presenting from the primary source. Avoid contractions, colloqualisims, jargon, convoluted sentences, fragments, awkwardly constructed sentences, vague pronoun usage, missing subjects, etc. 10 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Structure and Development This is essential: Your essay must be well developed. Your thesis is the backbone of the paper. Without a thesis, no quality grade can be given. The main ideas are the legs for that backbone. Make them strong, logical, appropriately presented of sequence, relevant, connected, and based on an idea from the primary source that led you to the thesis statement you present in the introductory paragraph, ' Make sure your body paragraphs have one and only one main idea and that the main idea directly supports the thesis statement written. Extract your supporting ideas from both the primary source and the secondary sources. The more the better. Create strong transitions into and out of body paragraphs.
